'TIME TO MOVE ON'

You know L.A. Starz absolutely adores awards shows and would like nothing more than to see Jane Kaczmarek take home her much-deserved Emmy Award.  But in light of the $4.5 million tab already invested in two postponed / cancelled attempts to present the 53rd Annual Emmy Awards, L.A. Starz has a suggestion for this year's Emmy producers.  Rather than invest millions more in a live show, simply host a couple of nice luncheons, one in Los Angeles, one in New York.   Engage an entertaining emcee to preside over the events and hand out trophies.

Announce the winners, celebrate over lunch, and get back to the business of entertainment.

Winners can post their thank you speeches on their official websites or distribute press releases.

And as for those expensive goody baskets assembled for the presenters, we suggest they be donated to eBay's Auction for America.  Auction a few complete baskets and sell other items individually and in small lots so that everyone can afford to participate in the bidding.

You'll commission an unforgettable Emmy deed.

(editor's note 10/18/01: who listens to us?  the Emmys have now been scheduled for the third time - November 4, 2001)

editor's note:  While the suggestion of donating the gift baskets to eBay's Auction for America is an exceptional idea, in reality it might not be possible to carry out since presenter gift baskets are routinely distributed at rehearsals the day before the ceremony.   Therefore, such an idea would have to have the full cooperation of the 51 celebrity presenters.   The gift baskets given out at the 2000 Emmy Awards were EACH worth over $8,000 and this year's goody bags are valued at $20,000!
Swarovski gave the Academy of Arts and Sciences 450 Brave Heart pins, a crystallized red, whiteand blue flag design encased in a silver heart, to distribute to Emmy Awards guests.

The pin was created as a tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in the September 11 tragedy.  If the Emmy Awards are not held, we encourage ATAS to auction off the 450 pins through eBay Charity Auctions to benefit any number of fundraising organizations.

SHOULD EMMY PRESENTERS KEEP THE GIFT BASKETS??

Jim Chabin, president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), told USA Today that some of the Emmy presenters had picked up their goodie bags during rehearsals. Chabin says all of the presenters will get them.

"These are people who gave their hearts and showed up," he says. "We want to thank them because they were doing run-throughs and rehearsals right up until the cancellation."

The 51 baskets are each worth more than $20,000 ... a total of over $1 million.

We ask, for doing what??  Appearing and presenting at an awards ceremony is good P.R. for any celebrity.  Why are they also rewarded with such expensive gifts?  Especially now, when America is 'at war' and the public's focus is on efforts for the good of the country.

We have written to the Academy of Arts & Sciences (ATAS) with our concerns and suggestion to donate these items to charity (see corresponding article).  Here is some information if you want to express your opinions:
