A GRAND OL' SLIME at the 2005 KIDS CHOICE AWARDS!
Hollywood's hottest stars, including Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, Alyssa Milano, Cameron Diaz, Johnny Depp, Jamie Foxx, Hayden Christiansen, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Chris Rock, and Simple Plan, gathered before a live audience of 10,000 screaming fans at the 18th Annual Kids Choice Awards, held April 2, 2005, at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion. When not needed on stage for the event, Kids Choice presenters and performers were invited to relax in the Mattel Celebrity Talent Retreat, where Karen Wood's Backstage Creations produced another fabulous display of neat treats and sweets, surrounded by comfortable digs where they could rest their feet.
Actor-rapper Will Smith kicked off the evening with his first award show musical performance in three years. The Kids Choice favorite debuted Switch from his upcoming album Lost and Found, in an energetic production that included clowns, drummers and breakdancers sambaing around a cotton candy machine.
Hayden Christiansen presented alongside Darth Vader, R2D2, C3PO. The Star Wars foursome gave Usher two Blimps, for Favorite Male Singer and Favorite Song (Burn), and in turn, Usher gave the audience some heartfelt advice: "Make sure you brush your teeth, say your prayers, eat your vitamins. You can be anything you want to be in life. All you have to do is believe in yourself."
Jada Pinkett-Smith and Chris Rock were on hand to celebrate Will Smith's choice for Favorite Voice in an Animated Movie (Shark Tale.) The perpetually boisterous audience quieted down at Smith's insistence. As he did at the 2003 Kids Choice Awards, Smith put aside his comedic talents to share warm paternal advice.
"The key to life is running and reading," he said, explaining that running teaches us not to quit when things get tough. As for reading, he said, "There's no problem (through history) that hasn't been solved and written about in a book. I'm up here now because I run and I read."
"When people run until they think they've reached their breaking point," he explained, "they teach themselves to find the strength to go on. You will learn how to not quit when things get harder in your life."
Queen Latifah was another top talent who used the moment to impart sage advice to the Kids Choice audience. The Wannabe Award, an annual honor bestowed on a celebrity role model who kids most want to emulate, was presented to Queen Latifah by Halle Berry. The award acknowledged her work on behalf of children's charities as much as her success as a recording artist and movie actress. Upon accepting the award, Latifah thanked the kids of America, and her parents for “setting such a good example... I wannabe like my mom and dad,” she said, and she urged parents to “raise your kids right.”
The Nickelodeon Kids Choice Wannabe Award was created in 2001, with the first award going to Tom Cruise. Subsequent winners include Janet Jackson (2002), Will Smith (2003) and Adam Sandler (2004).
Ah, back to the usual awards show irreverence. In lieu of the annual "Best Burp" award, Nickelodeon launched a new category this year. Prior to the show, 2003 Best Burp Award Winner Justin Timberlake presided over the "Celebrity Hidden Talent" competition on the Kids Choice Awards Orange Carpet. The first ever Best Burp award winner, Cameron Diaz (2001), revealed her special language, “A Speak,” and co-Best Burp award winner (she tied in 2002 with croc hunter Steve Irwin), Jessica Alba, wowed the crowd with her double-jointed backwards thumb. But it was KCA newcomer Jamie Foxx who won yet another "coveted" award to display beside his Oscar. Foxx demonstrated the unusual ability to roll his eyeballs in different directions (“eye-robics”). But wait ... hasn't Foxx been displaying this "hidden" talent since his days on "In Living Color!"?
Other winners included an absent Avril Lavigne for Favorite Female Singer, skateboard champ Tony Hawk scored his third consecutive Blimp as Favorite Athlete, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events was voted the Favorite Book, The Incredibles nabbed the Favorite Movie award, and Green Day picked up a blimp to go with its Grammys as winner of Favorite Group.
Prior to the event, Stiller said, “Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards is hands down the ultimate awards show involving the use of slime on stage. I’m looking forward to hosting the show and being in the middle of all the kid-fueled energy - and yes, maybe even orchestrating something so “kid-spirational” that Hollywood will be forced to let them sit at the grown ups awards table once and for all."
"If you connect with kids who have seen movies you're in, you can feel that connection they have to you and it's a very real thing," Stiller adds. "The enthusiasm kids have for what they like is very genuine. In that way it just feels very good to be a part of that connection. You can actually have fun and be a part of something that is very not cynical."
Nickelodeon's signature slimings occurred throughout the festivities. Will Ferrell was the evening's first slime victim, having buckets of the green goo dumped on him after he challenged soccer star Mia Hamm to a soccer kickoff. Later, Punk-pop quintet Simple Plan performed Shut Up!, the latest single off their second album “Still Not Getting Any,” as their electric guitars spewed green slime over the audience.
In a climactic end to the fun and frenzy, slime showered down on a surprised Johnny Depp, drenching him from head to toe, followed by the traditional release of colored confetti.
Ben Stiller hosted the free-for-all, the one night kids rule and Hollywood royalty revels with them.
Stiller arrived in a tricked-out mini convertible, dressed from head to toe in a silver jumpsuit he said would prevent him from being this year's slime victim. Last year's co-host (with Mike Myers), Cameron Diaz, immediately pelted him with cream pies!
Some stars choose the Kids Choice Awards as the perfect opportunity for a fun, family outing. Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith brought along their younger children (12 year old son Trey covered the event for Access Hollywood). Presenter George Lopez and winner Tony Hawk were accompanied by their wives and children. Jamie Foxx brought daughter Camille and a gaggle of her girlfriends. Among the many families in the audience were Anthony Anderson, Krista Allen, Cheech Marin, Fred Savage, Jasmine Guy, Tony Orlando, Heavy D, Gary Cole, Rodney & Holly Robinson Peete, James Caan, and Jon Voight with goddaughter Skyler Shaye.
Over 18 million votes determined the winners in 15 categories spanning movies, television, music, books, sports and video games. Joan of Arcadia's Amber Tamblyn and The O.C.'s Adam Brody presented the Favorite Movie Actress award to Hilary Duff (A Cinderella Story). Cameron Diaz and Jimmy Fallon awarded Nickelodeon's signature Blimp to Adam Sandler as Favorite Movie Actor (50 First Dates).
Also on hand were Andrea Bowen (doing correspondent duties for TV Guide Channel), Haylie Duff (ditto for the E! channel), Miranda Cosgrove, Devon Werkheiser, Amanda Bynes, Nick Cannon, Tom Kenny (the voice of SpongeBob Squarepants), Benji & Joel Madden from Good Charlotte, Lil Max$0, Kenny G, Lil' JJ, pro skateboarder Ryan Scheckler and Blake Lively, America Ferrera and Alexis Bledel, who, with Kids Choice Awards 2005 presenter Amber Tamblyn, appear in this summer's The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
Incidentally, it was at the 2003 Kids Choice Awards that the inaugural Best Burp winner Cameron Diaz passed the burp Blimp to new champ Justin Timberlake. It must have been quite a moment, as the two have been a couple since.
